SUMMARY OF THE CASUALTY
 

The explosion occured onboard the oil tanker the Friday 13 June 2003 in the morning off southwest France, killing one crew member.

The French tanker was empty of oil.

The explosion happened during cleaning at the stern of the ship. Part of the bridge was damaged and the hull was breached above the water line.

One crew member, a 35-year-old seaman from Senegal, was killed.

The tanker Chassiron was about 38 miles off the coast at the time. It returned to Bayonne, accompanied by two tow boats and an army helicopter.

The explosion is under a judiciary investigation opened by the Bayonne public prosecutors department and the National Maritime Police.

Le pétrolier "Chassiron" rentre à Bayonne après une explosion à bord qui a fait un mort.

Victime d'une explosion dans ses cuves en début de matinée, le pétrolier français "Chassiron" est rentré vendredi 13 Juin 2003 vers 12h20 dans le port de Bayonne par ses propres moyens, accompagné par par le remorqueur AQUITAINE EXPLORER.

Immédiatement après l'explosion, trois navires de pêche présents sur zone étaient prêts à intervenir tandis que le CROSSA dépêchait l'hélicoptère de la Gendarmerie de Bayonne, le Dauphin SP de La Rochelle, trois vedettes SNSM, le remorqueur AQUITAINE EXPLORER et la vedette RESEDA de la Gendarmerie Maritime.

Un remorqueur et une vedette de sauvetages espagnols étaient également prêts à intervenir.

Le pétrolier, qui avait quitté ce même port de Bayonne à 5h30, a vu une de ses cuves exploser en pleine mer vers 7h30 du matin, entraînant la mort d'un marin sénégalais âgé de 35 ans. Une équipe d'experts a inspecté le bateau avant de l'autoriser à pénétrer dans le port de Bayonne.

Lors de l'explosion, le marin Fall Mame, occupant la fonction de pompiste sur le navire, a trouvé la mort. Son corps a été retrouvé quelques heures plus tard.

Une enquête judiciaire, confiée à la Gendarmerie Maritime, a été ouverte par le parquet de Bayonne ainsi qu'une enquête technique menée par le BEA Mer.
