The explosion occured onboard the oil tanker the Sunday 6 October 2002 in the morning at the oil termnial "Ash Shihr" (Yemen). The French tanker was discharging his cargo when the the explosion happened. The explosion is considered as a "terrorism attack".

Un incendie de cargaison s’est déclaré dimanche 6 octobre 2002, à 5 h GMT, sur le pétrolier double-coque français « Limburg », dans les eaux yéménites suite à un attentat. Le navire, d’une capacité de 300 000 tonnes, faisait route vers la bouée de chargement (SBM) du terminal pétrolier d’Ash Shihs (province de Hadramout), avec 57 000 tonnes de brut arabian heavy, pour compléter sa cargaison, après une escale à Ra’s Tannura (Arabie Saoudite). L’explosion s’est produite à 3 km du terminal. La cuve numéro 4 tribord a été percée en deux endroits et l’hydrocarbure déversé s’est enflammé. L’incendie a duré 36 heures et a été combattu par le remorqueur présent près de la bouée SBM et par les équipes Sécurité de la société Nexen. Localisation géographique de l’évènement : golfe d'Aden, devant la côte sud-est du Yémen, a trois milles nautiques du port de d’Ash-Shihr, près de Mukalla, province d’Hadramout. Navire affecté : LIMBURG, Pétrolier double coque âgé de deux ans. Longueur : 330 mètres. Capacité : 300 000 tonnes Pavillon : Français (Kerguelen) Armateur : EURONAV (Luxembourg) Affréteur : British Petroleum qui l’a sous affrété à Malaysia International Shipping Corp (MISC) qui est la branche armateur de Petronas (compagnie nationale Malaysienne en 'time charter'). Management : France Shipmanagement (France) Chargement : 397.749 barils de brut Equipage : 25 hommes : 8 français (dont le commandant) et 17 bulgares. |

On October 6, 2002, the VLCC (very large crude carrier) Limburg (2000 – 298.997 dwt) – sailing off the coast of Yemen – caught fire following an explosion in the area of its number 4 cargo tank. The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation. The double hull-double bottom ship was only carrying a part cargo of crude oil. In the meantime, the fire and the environmental risk have been contained. With the exception of one Bulgarian seaman, all crew members have safely left the vessel. The ship flies the French flag and is operated by a company of the Euronav group, which in turn belongs to the CMB group. The damage to the ship, whatever the cause may be, is adequately covered on the international insurance market. |
